Miyamoto Musashi (1944) - Legendary director Kenji Mizoguchi's take on Musashi's battle against Sasaki Kojiro. Nonomiya Nobuo and Mataichiro visit Miyamoto to ask him if he will teach them the way of the sword, so they can avenge their murdered father. Miyamoto refuses on the fact it's for revenge. Eventually he agrees to train them, meanwhile the brothers Hidarimoto Kurodo and Magoshiro who killed Nobuo and Mataichiro father, find out that Musashi is training them. Realizing their in trouble they seek the help of Sasaki Kojiro. One day Musashi leaves the village where Nobuo and Mataichiro are hiding, the brothers and Kojiro use this time to attack Nobuo and Mataichiro, killing Mataichiro. Again Nobuo seeks the help of Musashi. Musashi is on the hunt for Kojiro, the duel will take place on Ganryu Island.Filmed 9 years before the classic Ugetsu, this short film running in at only 53 minutes really captures the essence of Japanese cinema in the mid 1900's. Excellent film.
