Fatal Move - Sammo Hung vs. Wu Jing

Watched this yesterday and thought it was one of the best Asian films released this year. Sammo Hung, Wu Jing, Danny Lee and Simon Yam, what more could you ask for. The action is brutal and intense, my only real gripe with it is the CGI blood. Just wasn't done well and it took something away from the overall enjoyment of the film. Fatal Move reminds me of some of the great action films from Hong Kong's heyday. Maybe I'm easy to please but I think you're nuts if you don't have a smile on your face from ear to ear after watching it.

On February 28th the Asian film community lost one of our own Bobby "Linn" Haynes. Linn died due to injures from a automobile accident. What I present to you is the last commentary track recorded by Linn for the newly released Heroes Two DVD from Media Blasters. The PQ is better then this film as ever looked. Going back to the commentary track it's by far one of the best I've ever listened too. I would suggest that you run out and buy a copy immediately.

After listening to the commentary track last night I decided to rip it and post it for anyone who wants it. The insight Linn provides is a complete joy to listen too.

Directed by Teinosuke Kinugasa, Gate of Hell is amazing piece of Japanese cinema. The story takes place in 12th-century Japan during the Heian period and at the start of a revolt. During the confusion and fear running rampant through the royal palace in Kyoto, Lady Kesa (Machiko Kyô), is rescued by a soldier named Moritoh (Kazuo Hasegawa). After the revolt fails, Moritoh is told that he can have anything that he wants, and what he wants is Lady Kesa to be his wife. He is quickly told, however, that she is already married to Wataru Watanabe (Isao Yamagata). Rather than seek something different, Moritoh becomes dangerously obsessed with Lady Kesa. Which leads us to a shocking ending.

Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead - Troma FTW! Being a ex employee and just a fucking nut for Troma, it's safe to say this could be the greatest Troma picture to date. I love me some Toxie, Tromeo and Juliet and Sgt. Kabukiman but Jesus Christ this is the mecca of all things Troma. The film starts off with a couple dry humping in a Indian (Native American) cemetery, one thing leads to another and the clothes go flying. For whatever reason a zombie hand comes out of the ground and sticks his finger in the guys ass, which breaks off inside. Arbie (Jason Yachanin) not realizing what happen thinks his girlfriend Wendy (Kate Graham) put a butt plug in. Skip one college semester later and the cemetery has been knocked down to build a new fast food chicken joint over it. Wendy comes back to town with her new girlfriend Micki (Allyson Sereboff). Arbie looking to make something of himself gets a job working for the restaurant. The dead Indians possessed the chicken where they become zombies and attack the town of Tromaville. Anyway, the film is so off the walls that you can't help but love it. The musical numbers were fantastic, the effects were really good for a Troma picture as well. Lloyd Kaufman is a genius, no doubt about it.

This has to be one of the strangest animation films ever. Jimmy is an elephant that's addicted to drugs by his handler Roy Arnie voiced by Woody Harrelson. Their part of a traveling circus. Roy stole the drugs from the Russians who are now looking for him. Meanwhile, an animal rights group is trying to capture Jimmy to liberate him. Simon Pegg does one of the voices. Jimmy's on one hell of a speed trip and escapes from the circus. Too weak to go on the elephant passes out all cracked out. A mountain moose comes to the rescue and helps Jimmy kick the habit. The Russians are after the elephant because Roy hid a million dollars worth of heroin in it's ass. It's all comes down to the ending where all hell breaks loose. between Roy and his gang, the Russians, the animal rights group and some hunters. I really enjoyed the film and thought it was very different from anything I've seen before. Some real wacky animations used for it.

The film takes place during the Japanese occupation of Korea, towards the end of the war. Anyway, the story pretty much centers around this 3000 carat diamond that was found in a coffin. The Japanese want it to show how powerful the empire is. The Koreans want it to liberate themselves. The diamond is stolen by Haedanghwa from the Japanese the rest of the film is a cat and mouse game. There are 2 supporting actors in the film, one plays a cook the other the host of the restaurant. They had me rolling the entire time, I haven't laughed like that watching a Korean film in a long time. The music and overall look of the film was done really well. There are a couple of nice fistfights and things going boom. I'm glad to see Korea take such a dark time in their history and laugh about it. Even though it's pro Korea. :)

First time director Jieho Lee could very well be the next big thing. The Air I Breath is told in 4 parts love (Bacon), happiness (Whitaker), sorrow (Gellar) and pleasure (Fraser). All four parts interlock with each other. What an all star cast with Kevin Bacon, Julie Delpy, Brendan Fraser, Andy Garcia, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Forest Whitaker and Kelly Hu. I felt I was watching an American Korean film. The film is shot brilliantly and one of the best films I've seen in a long time.

This was one of my favorite 80's movie growing up. I had no clue it was even available on DVD until a few days ago. The movie is about this stereotypical computer geek named Bradley Brinkman. Bradley works for a software developer, on the night of an important downline Bradley writes "I'd sell my soul to go home" on his computer. The computer starts writing his project for him. His boss finds it the next day and loves it, he gives Bradley the summer off to work at home to write another big seller. Mr. Brinkman decides to rent out a summer home to get to know the local yuppie crowd. When they all reject him, he sees the girl of his dreams named O'Brien, who happens to be a worker for Satan. She tells him she was the one who wrote the paper on his computer. O'Brien offers a contract for the summer if he chooses that will turn him into a Hunk. The only catch is he has to give up his soul. He accepts, the next day he wakes up Hunk Golden friend of Bradley Brinkman. Now everyone is in love with Hunk, everyone at beach wants to be with him, slowly the person who once was Bradley Brinkman is dying because Hunk is changing who he used to be. Anyway he has up to Labor day to decide if he wants to stay Hunk Golden or go back to Bradley.

I know it's sounds retarded , but like I said this is 80's silly comedy and I still love it as much as I did back then.

Realizing their in trouble they seek the help of Sasaki Kojiro. One day Musashi leaves the village where Nobuo and Mataichiro are hiding, the brothers and Kojiro use this time to attack Nobuo and Mataichiro, killing Mataichiro. Again Nobuo seeks the help of Musashi. Musashi is on the hunt for Kojiro, the duel will take place on Ganryu Island.

Filmed 9 years before the classic Ugetsu, this short film running in at only 53 minutes really captures the essence of Japanese cinema in the mid 1900's. Excellent film.

This subject is something that has been bothering me lately. I own 2 Blu-ray players (PS3 60gb & Sony S300) as well as a Toshiba XA2 HD player. I have around 140 Blu-ray discs and prolly around 150 HDs.

With that said.

I'm just curious why people get so in to the format war to begin with? Having both formats, I see or hear no difference. I like both formats the same and I could care less who wins to be honest. I've been on forums and all I see is people bash each other. It's kinda like being a fanboy to the tenth power! I'm all about people being down with their favorite format but, I think people do get carried away. I wish they would both last, just so it gives me another option. Look at it as a good thing. Like, videogames you have Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. 3 different companies competing for the same market (Sort of). Why can't we have that on a media level? I see nothing wrong with two formats for HD films. Whoever wins it's going to be a lot of "I told you so" all over the forum boards. Which is a little dumb. I'm sorry thats how I feel.

Normally I'm all for the Holidays. Christmas when I was a kid was the best time in the world. Now, I dread going shopping more this time of year, then any other. People suck, I've come to realize this. People become very nasty and incredibly stupid at the same time. Whose driving at a snails pace or stopping their car in the middle of the road. People cutting on checkout lines at stores. It's like everyone loses their patience all at the same time.

Let's be for real for a minute. We all know what Christmas means as a religious holiday. If Christmas is about spending time (and money) on love ones. It's supposed to be a joyful time not a mad dash to run in to a store and be rude to random people because that $15 dollar toaster is sold out. What the fuck is that all about?

I went to Toys R Us this morning for their "Door Buster" sale looking for a Zune for $80 dollars. Well I got to the store at 4:30am and there were already like 150 people on line. Once I got inside I ask how many Zunes were in stock in which I was told there were only 12 in. So I told my friend Marcos "Let's bounce out this bitch" no reason to stay on line when all I wanted was one thing anyway. When people found this out it was like you were taking away a parents first born child. It's like the devil inside rips out of people and they lose who they were. Whatever the case, no harm no foul right? I got in my car and drove home. No big deal, I just don't know why a time when it's about bringing family's together everyone has to become a douche bag. The internet is the greatest invention of all time. I can order whatever I want from the comfort of my home and have my items delivered to me. What more could you ask for? Why do people kill themselves to go out and shop and become nasty pricks? This I will never understand.

Sorry for the lack of updates. Truth be told I've been really lazy. November and December are crazy busy with awesome videogames. So must of my time is playing them. Last night I watched Rescue Dawn as well as Superbad. I felt the script was lacking on R.D. All and all though a very good film. Superbad was great, I was cracking up most of the film. Anyway I'm gonna be updating more frequently from here on out.

I didn't really want to turn this in to a OST blog, but doing the podcast for October and being my favorite month. It was all about horror films and the scores that go with them.

Anyone who knows me, knows I love Asian cinema. So when my uncle told me about this CD I knew I needed to listen to it.

Today I'm bringing you music from the legendary blind swordsman Zatoichi.

I have another volume I will be posting today or tomorrow.

So, Halloween is tomorrow and I'm still trucking along watching as many horror films as possible. I would be lying if I didn't say that I'm really going to miss the month of October. It's been a great month for me as far as watching films and surrounding myself with all that is horror and Halloween related.

Over at Robotronic Dynamite the last cast (Episode 28) for the month of October is up for all of you to to listen to. We have a great segment on Return Of The Living Dead. Please do check it out.

Fellow caster Brandon Fincher posted his top 10 Scream Queens. While I think a couple of actresses were left out. For the sake of argument it is his list after all! What do you think? Leave him a comment with what scream queens you think should be on his top 10.

So anyway, this month I've been listening to a lot of horror radio shows of yesteryear. I've found this torrent a couple of weeks ago of the 10 Scariest Radio Episodes Of All Time. My favorite being the first track Three Skeleton Key with Vincent Price. I'm going to try and post some more tomorrow.

I'm pretty sure I have my films for Halloweem set up already. I'm going to start off watching Evil Dead 2 followed by Halloween and Dawn Of The Dead all on Blu-ray.

I went out today and watched 30 Days Of Night. I had a great time watching it but I did have some problems with some of the things about the story. I felt like they didn't really give you any background story about how these Vampires live or why they are the way they are. You know what I'm saying?

I was watching Christine the other day and it dawn on me that John Carpenter is my idol. He can direct and compose music like no other. To be honest I think Christine might be Carpenter's best score, yes even better than Halloween.

It's been years since I've seen George Romero's Martin. I remember really being into the film tho. Romero will always be one of my favorite directors. Ever since I was a kid and I saw Dawn Of The Dead for the first time. I knew as a director he was special. Romero has this power to turn a b-movie with all the clichés intact and turn it in to a more powerful film with meaning. A lesser director wouldn't be able to pull it off.

Anyway:

Martin is a 17 year old boy with the thirst of blood. He gets off by tranquilizing women before he murders and sexually assaults them. What the film leads you to believe is that Martin is a Vampire but not in the traditional sense. He's not afraid of garlic or crucifixes. Holy water wont burn him, he's a regular kid who just so happens to drink human blood or maybe Romero is just showing us a different side of Vampires! I don't know you be the judge.

I have to admit on my quest to find some horror OST's I came across Patrick by Richard Franklin (Psycho II, F/X2). I've never heard of it but what got me excited is that the legendary group Goblin did the score for the film. While not the best efforts by Goblin it's still a very good soundtrack. My favorite track being Bagliori Di Luce. So now I'm intrigued to see what this film is all about. I already put in on the top of my queue on Netflix.

I have to admit I've never seen Fulci's The Black Cat. All though I've been meaning too. From what I've been hearing it's one of his lesser efforts. What's funny is that I was listening to the score which made me want to see it all the more. The great Pino Donaggio takes us on another journey in to time and space. I've must have listened to it 3 times already today. Very very good score.

Fred Dekker (Monster Squad) the director of the 1986 classic Night OF The Creeps. Brings us one of the best Sci-Fi, Horror comedy films EVER. I just finish watching it and it's still holds up after 21 years. The beginning of the movie with the little alien guy running around look so bad you gotta love it. The wise cracking Det. Ray Cameron played by Tom Atkins at his best. Whatever happen to Jill Whitlow who played Cynthia? She was a hottie! I don't know what it is about it but its one of those films whenever it's on I have to watch it.

I uploaded this very hard to find soundtrack for the film. I think it might be a bootleg version. To be honest I'm not even sure if there ever was an official release.

If you love the film, I'm sure you're a fan of the music as well.

So, Monsters HD is showing all the Children Of The Corn films back to back. I was up until 9am watching the first 3 before I passed out.

As far as the first film is goes it's by far the best one in the series. I don't remember ever watching it, But man I thought it was great. The kids were brutal in it. Malachai played Courtney Gains was a terrifying character. Plus I have to mention that little devil worshiping Issac (John Franklin) who later appeared in COTC 666: Issac's Return. Which was terrible. I really enjoyed Children Of The Corn and Highly Recommend it for those of you that still haven't seen it or if you have just see it again.

Now as far as the score is concern I think it's one if the more frightening scores I've heard. The Title sequence alone is worth checking out the rest of the soundtrack. Jonathan Elias went on to compose the score for Pathfinder.

Angus Scrimm is freaky, I think he is one of the best horror monsters. Something about Phantasm still freaks' me out. I guess the whole idea of some tall old ass gravedigger, throwing coffins and shit all over the place. Whose with me?

I was always a big fan of the score of Phantasm. Fred Myrow composed some really eerie music for the films.

Chucky is one mean S.O.B.

So last night well actually this morning I ordered Child's Play on PPV-HD. It was well worth the $3.99 price tag. I remember seeing Child's Play in the theaters back in 1988, I was 11. The movie bugged me out big time. At that time My Buddy was kinda big for kids. Which I was never able to look at the same way again. My Buddy was the inspiration for the design of Chucky. Which looking back Chucky was compete rip off of My Buddy. Whatever the case, Chucky was one mean son of a bitch. Watching it this morning I've come to realize I think Child's Play was more of a dark comedy than a horror flick. I found myself cracking up on how raunchy they made Chucky. Who would believe a doll could come to life and kill people? It was a perfect mix children's toys with a serial killer. Long live Charles Lee Ray..

A Nightmare on Elm Street - Paranoid Comic

In the spirit of Halloween, you gotta represent with some Nightmare On Elm Street. Just the whole idea of Freddy and coming out of ones dream, Is just a horrifying concept, your worst nightmares becoming reality is just nuts. Over the years Freddy's lost a little something, as each film came out it was less horror and more of a spoof. But on the other hand, Freddy's a character no matter how bad the film I will still get some enjoyment out of it.

The last real Nightmare On Elm Street film came out 13 years ago. I know Freddy vs Jason was released about 4 or 5 years ago. But I would love to see a new Freddy flick with Craven or Aja at the helm. Bring it back to it's roots.

So I downloaded the torrent for a 3 part Nightmare comic that came out in 2005 called Parnoid. Publish by Avatar Press, story by Brian Pulido (Lady Death) and Art by Juan Jose Ryp. The story is not as bad as I thought it was going to be. The art on the other hand I'm still on the fence about. It kinda reminds me of the old Creepy comic style art. Which isn't a bad thing per say. I don't know let me know what you guys think.
